From Dire Straits to "Dire Straights". Telegraph Road is probably the longest song ever dedicated to a road - not a moment, lover, or friend, but a road. It is actually an exact road too: Telegraph Road in Michigan, USA. The band does not hold much affection for the road (being from England and all), but it did leave an impression on their discography. Dire Straights road stands at impressive fourteen minutes all dedicated to an often ignored road.

The song stands as Dire Straits' most complex for a band that is already pretty complex. There's a long story behind the tale of Telegraph Road. Bandlead Mark Knopfler was inspired by the road to tell a story of civilization and disappointment. It winds its way through England, the United States, and even Norway on occasion. Knopfler's guitar is the key to that map: a certain special relationship.

Look out the window and listen to me explain the route formerly known as "Telegraph Road".
