Valeton GP-200 Unboxing & Demo! | ALL AMPS and CABS w/ guitar | No talking/effects, RAW TONE review!

Published
All amps and cabs STRAIGHT INTO the interface, no effects, no post processing, PURE RAW TONES only! Many requested us to review the Valeton GP-200 and see how it fares, especially against the new and similarly priced Harley Benton DNAfx Git Pro! So without further ado, here is the most concise and objective review that you will find of the Valeton GP-200 anywhere:

Pros:
- all the quality footswitches you need (4 more than the HB!)
- great exp pedal (MUCH easier to set than on the HB!)
- beautiful display (nicer than the HB, easier to film, adjustable brightness)
- all the I/O's you need (just like the HB)
- quick adjustment knobs (HB has fewer of them)
- each amp has unique settings to reflect the real thing (HB amp models all have the same settings)
- amps sound good right of the bat (HB's were very good too!)
- amps have nice dynamics, going from clean to breakup with pick attack alone (HB does it too)
- blocks can be moved around (just like the HB)
- 71 great amp models with unique features (HB has only 58, all with identical settings)
- has dedicated bass amps (HB doesn't, but it's really not a big deal)
- more effects than the HB
- has switchable global EQ (HB doesn't)

Cons:
- for some reason, the quick adjustment gain knob didn't seem to do anything while the volume adjusted both gain and volume. But this can likely be set from the unit, so it's not a big deal
- it's considerably bigger than the HB
- it's a bit heavier than the HB
- the signal chain might seem a bit less intuitive to set than the HB at first
- costs 14 euros more than HB (02 February 2022)

Neutral:
- some amp models have A TON OF BASS especially with the gain and amp volume maxed, but you can easily dial it down in so many different ways (amp EQ, drive EQ, EQ pedal, global EQ, etc.) that it's literally not an issue. Better to have great low end and dial it down than to miss it and be forced to add it.
- bass amps are completely clean even with amp gain and volume maxed. But there is no such thing as a guitar or bass only amp. ALL AMPS, cabs, effects, gear, etc. can sound good with both instruments, so this is definitely not an issue. HB has no bass amps, and you really don't miss them. Plus, with the Valeton GP-200, THOU SHALL NOT BE WANTING for massive low end response!
- it's still a modeller, and from Flamma to Fractal, and it will never sound like a tube amp. Everything has its own sound, period. Even tube amps sound completely different from each other, so to discuss which sound is "better" is completely pointless. Just as pointless as arguing that a digital model can ever sound identical to a tube amp when played alone in a room at reasonable levels. Variety needs not to be quashed and equalized until everything is another copy of something else, but accepted and navigated. Embrace, experiment, and enjoy the awesome variety of gear that we have, every bit of it! Digital, solid state, tube, all of it in the right hands can yield greatness!
- to sound their best, all modellers need great transparent monitors just as much as tube amp heads need their cabs
- colorful happy lights (hooray!)

The verdict? It's a very nice thing to have around, and we're keeping this one around for many more videos and demos! It's more difficult to set and use at first than a tube amp, and it will never replace our OR15, ever. Nothing will. But if this is all you have to plug in, rest assured: it is enough in itself to create legendary tones and music! If a modeller is what you need, then we can definitely recommend it! Is it better than the HB DNAfx Git Pro? Yes, yes it is. The tones are mostly a matter of taste, none is objectively better than the other. But feature wise, the GP-200 objectively wins.
